What's your feelings on people's treatment of cockroaches when they don't go with the decor? :) Where does one draw the sacredness line on life?

I decide daily which lives around me will live, die, and how, and there's nothing anyone can really say about my choices without appealing to a Greater Principle.

Which is what ACS does daily, deciding whether a puppy should die rather than live a few months as a commodity.

Right?
--Mmotomataruhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13274172230977843363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28594482.post-1154297050697448492006-07-30T17:04:00.000-05:002006-07-30T17:04:00.000-05:00Don: Thanks for the comment and for stopping by!Y...Don: Thanks for the comment and for stopping by!

Y: I agree 100% that none of this is surprising to me anymore. I think your point about selfish and materialistic thinking trickling down to animals is a very valid one. The commodification of non-human animals is a symptom. One cause is what I noted, that people treat non-human life as less sacred (or not sacred!) than human life. I have other causes in mind as well (topics for other posts). And I think you definitely hit on one in the "selfish and materialistic" thinking you mentioned.

I am pro-choice too—but I think the choice has to be based on a "real" reason, not some genetic predisposition to obesity or "my baby's going to have the wrong eye color!" Sad, isn't it? I struggle mightily to respect people who will do such things. I know they're only responding to their past, their upbringing, their experiences, and despite the reprehensibility of their actions, they are still deserving of compassion. But I admit I have a lot of trouble with this.Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17934386917419130389noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28594482.post-1154275317593785952006-07-30T11:01:00.000-05:002006-07-30T11:01:00.000-05:00Appalling, yes Mike. Not when I'm still reeling from the fact that people will abort their children if they've been genetically predetermined for obesity.

And I'm pro-choice.

I don't mean to undermine your emphasis on the commodification of non-human animals. It is reprehensible. But unfortunately, I know of people who abort because the kid doesn't go with the decor.

Such selfish and material thinking has a trickle down effect in the animal kingdom.

(love the photo chosen; black beauty's puppies in a big blue pail; too cute)Yasmin Waringhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15993574371849805895noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28594482.post-1154265427036300312006-07-30T08:17:00.000-05:002006-07-30T08:17:00.000-05:00Beauty of a story.
